چکیده

The temporal variability of interception losses was measured for contrasting forest communities in the southeastern United States. Throughfall was measured simultaneously at Fort Benning in western Georgia for the five forest communities that are characteristic of the region. The measured interception losses over the study period were 22.3, 18.6, 17.7, 17.6, and 17.4% of the total precipitation in the pine, mixed forest, lowland hardwood, pine plantation, and upland hardwood forests, respectively. The Gash model with a wet canopy Penman–Monteith evaporation, using annual average canopy cover values, predicted interception losses with an agreement of K8.1–10.5% on an annual basis. The model improved accuracy for all forest communities when seasonal changes in canopy cover were included. The Gash model’s assumption of a constant canopy storage capacity was examined for pine and lowland hardwood plots with varying densities and found to have good agreement for mature pine forests having 64, 44, and 29% canopy cover. However, riparian wetland forest predictions required corrections for species composition and understory vegetation. q 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Chemical Composition of Rainfall and Throughfall in Five Forest Communities: A Case Study in Fort Benning, Georgia

In order to investigate the effects of canopy-dependent processes on throughfall chemistry, comparative studies on the chemical composition of throughfall were carried out in five characteristic forest types of the southeastern United States within Fort Benning Military Installation from January 2002 to August 2003. The concentrations and fluxes of and total organic carbon (TOC), total Kjeldahl...

Soil moisture variability in a temperate deciduous forest: insights from electrical resistivity and throughfall data

In deciduous forests, soil moisture is an important driver of numerous physical, microbial, and biogeochemical processes. Therefore, characterizing the interactions between vegetation and soil moisture is critical to forecast long-term water resources and ecosystem health. However, these interactions are difficult to measure, both in time and space. Recent studies have shown the ability of elec...

Spatial variability of throughfall water and chemistry and forest floor water content in a Douglas fir forest stand

This study focuses on spatial variability of throughfall water and chemistry and forest floor water content within a Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii, Franco L.) forest plot. Spatial patterns of water and chemistry (NH4 +, NO3 -, SO4 2-, Cl-, Mg2+, Ca2+, Na+ and K+) were compared and tested for stability over time. The spatial coefficient of variation (CV) was between 18 and 26% for amounts o...

Oak trees decline; a sign of climate variability impacts in the west of Iran

The Persian oak, Quercus brantii, trees in the Zagros region of Western Iran have been in decline since 2000. The decline is assumed to be highly connected with changes in meteorological parameters. Our objectives were to quantify the long-term trends in meteorological parameters and reference evapotranspiration (ET0) in the Zagros region and estimate ecohydrological parameters highly affected ...

Lead and Cadmium Concentrations in Throughfall of Pinus eldarica

This research was carried out in order to quantify throughfall (TF) and interception loss (I) and to compare the chemical composition of TF, i.e. lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) as well as electrical conductivity (EC) and pH beneath Pinus eldarica and Cupressus arizonica plantations and the open field rainfall. The research was accomplished in the Chitgar Forest Park, a semi-arid polluted urban area...
